Breast Cancer Treatment
Breast surgery is a key component of breast cancer treatment. Breast surgery can be used alone or in combination with other treatments. Treatment is dependent on the type of cancer and the goal of treatment.
For individuals that are at high risk for developing breast cancer may have breast surgery as a preventative.
Types of breast surgery include:
Partial removal of breast tissue is called a lumpectomy
Full removal of the breast tissue is called a mastectomy
Surrounding lymph nodes may also be removed
The kind of breast cancer surgery depends on the size and stage of the breast cancer, other treatment options, and preference of the patient.
